What

is Peyronie's Disease?

Peyronie's disease is a condition characterized by the development of fibrous scar tissue, called plaques, within the penis. These plaques can cause the penis to become curved or bent during an erection, leading to pain, discomfort, and difficulties with sexual intercourse. Peyronie's disease can also result in erectile dysfunction and emotional distress.

How

Common Is Peyronie's Disease?

Peyronie's disease is estimated to affect approximately 3-9% of adult men. However, the exact prevalence may vary as many cases go unreported due to embarrassment or lack of awareness. It most commonly occurs in men between the ages of 40 and 60, but it can affect men of all ages.

What

Causes Peyronie's Disease?

The exact cause of Peyronie's disease is not fully understood. However, it is believed to be a result of the interplay between genetic, traumatic, and vascular factors. Some possible causes and contributing factors include:

  • Trauma or injury: Penile trauma, such as during sexual activity or accidents, can lead to the formation of scar tissue.

  • Abnormal healing response: In some individuals, the healing process after penile injury may result in the formation of excessive scar tissue, leading to Peyronie's disease.

  • Genetics: There may be a genetic component involved, as Peyronie's disease can sometimes run in families.

  • Vascular factors: Impaired blood flow to the penis or vascular conditions may contribute to the development of Peyronie's disease.

Who

Gets Peyronie's Disease

Peyronie's disease can affect any man, although certain factors may increase the risk. These include: â€‹

Age: It is more commonly observed in middle-aged and older men.

Family history: There may be a genetic predisposition, as Peyronie's disease can sometimes run in families.

Connective tissue disorders: Men with certain connective tissue disorders, such as Dupuytren's contracture, have a higher risk.

Trauma or injury: Previous penile trauma, such as bending or direct injury, may contribute to the development of Peyronie's disease.

How

Is Peyronie's Disease Treated?

Treatment options for Peyronie's disease aim to alleviate symptoms, improve sexual function, and address the curvature of the penis. These may include:

Medications: Certain oral medications may be prescribed to help reduce the size of the plaques and improve penile curvature.
Injections: Intralesional injections of medications, such as verapamil or Collagenase clostridium histolyticum (Xiaflex) into the plaques can help reduce pain and decrease plaque size.
Stretching devices: These devices are sometimes used to stretch and straighten the penis, providing temporary relief from curvature.
Surgery: Surgical intervention may be considered in certain cases or when other treatments have been ineffective. Procedures can involve plaque excision, grafting, or penile prosthesis implantation.

Our focus is treating the most common male health concerns including enlarged prostate, erectile dysfunction, vasectomy evaluation and Peyronie’s disease. In addition, we provide consultations addressing your general urology needs. Every visit is tailored to your specific complaint and not just a formulaic pill distribution. In addition to the virtual visit, we offer live in-person visits when warranted and can provide the in-person care that is often needed. While our competitors can offer a menu of medications our focus is addressing the underlying cause of your health complaint and can offer both medical and surgical solutions. Our physicians are ALL urologists, trained specifically in men’s health.
